HŽ publishes daily train 523 from Zagreb Glavni kolodvor 13:49 to Split 21:47, about eight hours. Its overnight train 1821 departs on Friday and arrives on Saturday. Check your date and current notices; a seat reservation or sleeping accommodation is separate from the main fare. |
Choosing your journey
Choose a direct coach for a shorter travel day. The train is an option if you prefer rail and can spare roughly eight hours; do not plan a tight ferry connection after either journey.

Compare the whole travel day
Coaches on the main corridor take roughly five to six hours, depending on the departure and traffic. The current daytime train takes about eight hours. Compare the arrival time and the kind of seat you want before choosing purely on fare. Arriva coaches, HŽ seaside services.
Leave from the correct Zagreb station
Coaches use Autobusni kolodvor, the main bus station; trains use Glavni kolodvor. They are different places. Add time to reach the right one with bags, buy water and find your platform.
For the coach, check whether the departure is direct and what luggage is included. For a night train, confirm that it runs on your date and whether you are buying a seat or a sleeping place. A train leaving at night does not automatically include a bed.
Arrive before making another booking
Split's main train and coach stations are beside the ferry port. That makes the next journey convenient, but finding a berth and boarding still takes time. Stay overnight before an important island connection, or leave a wide gap if you continue the same day.
Keep the first evening for checking in and a walk along the Riva. The palace and Marjan will be easier to enjoy after the long journey. Split guide.
