Zagreb suits a few days of markets, museums and unhurried walks before a longer journey south. Keep your first day around the Lower and Upper Towns, then choose a park or another museum instead of trying to squeeze Plitvice into the same afternoon.

A walk with time to stop
Begin at Ban Jelačić Square and head up to Dolac while the market is active. Continue towards Tkalčićeva for a break, then climb into the Upper Town. This keeps the steep section together instead of sending you up and down several times.
The Museum of Broken Relationships works well as the main indoor visit. Adult admission is €9; check the museum's opening times and concession rules before going. Leave enough time to read the stories rather than treating it as a quick photo stop. Museum tickets and hours.
For lunch, La Štruk gives you a chance to try štrukli without ordering a long multi-course meal. Later, return to the Lower Town parks. On a wet day, choose another indoor visit and shorten the uphill walk. Building access and renovations.
Buy the right tram ticket
ZET's advance-purchase tickets cost €0.53 for 30 minutes, €0.93 for 60 minutes and €1.33 for 90 minutes. Buying from the driver costs more. The €3.98 day ticket is useful only if your actual journeys justify it. Validate on boarding and check the zone coverage for a trip outside the city. ZET prices.
The funicular is operating again after its refurbishment. Its short ride costs €0.66; walking beside it remains an option if the steps suit you. It does not remove every hill in the Upper Town. ZET reopening notice.
Arriving before a trip south
The airport shuttle ends at the main bus station, not the main railway station. Pick the onward tram or walk for your room from there. For Split, compare the actual coach and train arrival times: rail is a substantial travel day. For Plitvice, settle the park entrance and onward bus before buying the admission slot.

Donji Grad puts the station, parks and central streets within a useful walking area. Around Britanski trg, check the slope and tram stop before booking. A room near the main bus station can make an early coach easier; add the tram ride into town when comparing it with a central room.
Getting Around
Use ZET trams for longer journeys and walk between the central sights. Buy and validate the ticket for the time you need; a cheap short ticket is poor value if it expires before your ride ends. Upper Town involves slopes and steps, even when the map looks compact.

€9.00The shuttle links the airport with Zagreb’s main bus station. Allow about 35 minutes plus waiting and traffic, then add the tram or walk to your room. City departures are normally every 30 minutes; use the current timetable for the first and last bus. Adult single ticket €9.

Visit Dolac in the morning for fruit, bread and cheese, then decide whether you want a picnic or a hot lunch. La Štruk on Skalinska is a named option for baked or cooked štrukli, a dough-and-cheese dish. Read the current menu before joining the queue; a filling lunch can leave dinner simple.
Worth Paying For
The Museum of Broken Relationships if its personal stories interest you. The small funicular fare may also be useful when you would rather avoid that particular climb.
Skip / Save Your Money
A sightseeing bus for a day spent between Ban Jelačić Square, Dolac and the Upper Town. Put that money towards one museum you actually want to see.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Check the current access notice for a church or museum before crossing town to visit it. Restoration work still affects some buildings. For accommodation, ask about stairs and parking rather than assuming an Upper Town address is easy with luggage.
