The Real Alpine Timeline

  • May to Early June: Valley lakes (Lake Bled, Lake Bohinj, Hallstatt) are green and pleasant for walking, but trails above 1,500 meters are still covered in heavy, melting snowpack. Mountain huts (koča in Slovenia, Hütte in Austria) remain shuttered.
  • Mid-June to September (The Golden Season): High alpine passes clear of snow, mountain huts open daily serving hot meals and dormitory lodging, and wildflowers carpet the meadows.
  • October: Alpine huts close by mid-October as winter snow storms return. Valley walking remains spectacular with golden larch foliage.
