Checking school holidays before booking a European trip
Use the right local calendars, then compare real fares and rooms to see whether moving your dates would help.
School holidays can add demand for flights and accommodation, but they do not produce the same price rise everywhere. The effect depends on the route, destination, event calendar and how many suitable rooms or seats remain. Use holiday dates as a clue for comparison, not as a guaranteed pricing formula.
The UK has several calendars
GOV.UK's school holiday finder directs visitors to local council information for England and Wales and links to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Dates vary, so one London calendar does not describe every UK family.
If you are travelling with school-age children, confirm the actual school's dates as well. Training days and local arrangements may differ from a broad holiday summary. If you are simply trying to avoid a busy departure period, check the regions most relevant to your airport.
Germany varies by state
The Kultusministerkonferenz calendar publishes dates for all 16 German states. Summer holidays are staggered, and other breaks differ too. There is no single German summer week that captures the whole country.
For example, the published autumn 2026 break runs from 5 to 17 October in Hesse and from 17 to 31 October in North Rhine-Westphalia. Use the official table for the state you need rather than copying an unsourced “Germany school holidays” date range.
Test whether different dates help
Search the same journey a few days earlier and later, including the return. Compare baggage, flight times and cancellation terms. Then price the same number of nights in accommodation with similar facilities and location.
A cheaper outbound fare may be cancelled out by an expensive return or an extra hotel night. Public holidays and local festivals can also keep prices high even outside school breaks.
