How Free Transit Works in Luxembourg

Since March 2020, public transport throughout the entire Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is completely free of charge.

The Practical Rules

  • Who Qualifies: Everyone. Citizens, cross-border commuters, and international tourists alike.
  • No Ticket Needed: You do not need to register, scan a card, download an app, or carry a ticket. Simply walk onto any tram, bus, or 2nd class train coach and sit down.
  • First Class Exception: First class on CFL trains still requires a paid ticket.
  • Cross-Border Trips: If traveling across the border into France, Belgium, or Germany, you only pay for the section of track outside the Luxembourg border.
