3 Days in Luxembourg: Capital, Vianden & Echternach

Keep both nights in the capital

This plan uses three days and two hotel nights in Luxembourg City. Vianden and Echternach are outings from that base, so both journey cards include the return. Leave your main luggage at the room on day two and arrange storage for the final day if your accommodation offers it.

On day one, walk from the upper-town streets towards the Bock and Corniche. Choose ordinary Bock admission if you want the underground visit, then leave time for the valley or a café. A late arrival is a reason to shorten the walk or move the paid visit, not to rush through the interior just before closing.

Give Vianden its own day

On day two, take a train to Ettelbruck and bus 181 towards Vianden. Use the complete route guide, including the connection and castle approach. Allow for the climb after the bus and check seasonal last entry before choosing a late departure from the capital.

Castle admission is separate from transport. After the rooms, come down for lunch or a river walk and return by bus and train to Luxembourg City. Save a later connection as well as your preferred return so an enjoyable lunch does not turn into a dash.

Keep the last outing close to Echternach

On day three, take bus 201 to Echternach and plan a return that fits your onward travel. The town, basilica surroundings and a short lake walk make a complete outing. The 3.25 km lake circuit is optional; choose a shorter walk if your departure or energy calls for it.

Schiessentümpel waterfall is outside Echternach near Mullerthal village. It is not part of this final-day town walk. For a longer woodland hike, add a day or replace the itinerary's town outing with a properly planned trail, including its approach and return transport.

If you have an early flight or international train, stay in the capital on day three. Free buses do not remove the need for airport travel, collecting luggage and check-in time. The shorter option above also works when only one day trip fits comfortably.

What the €430 example includes

For one traveller, the chosen plan uses two whole private-room nights at €140 (€280), three food allowances of €35 (€105), three amounts of €7 for extras (€21), Bock ordinary adult admission €11 and Vianden Castle €13. The total is €430. The final day has no hotel room charge.

For two adults sharing those same rooms, the room cost remains €280 and the other spending doubles: €580 together, or €290 each. Replace the room amounts with complete quotes for your dates, including compulsory charges. These are chosen examples, not available offers or a measured daily average.

The domestic second-class trains, public buses and airport tram used here cost €0. First-class rail, foreign sections of international journeys, taxis and sightseeing services are separate. Add any extra paid visits once, in place of any allowance for the same activity. The city budget cards are an alternative way to plan, so do not add them on top.
