Make the castle the main appointment
Vianden Castle stands above the town, so reaching the bus stop is not the end of the journey. Allow time for the approach, especially if you want a café stop first. Cobbled slopes and the castle's stairs need more thought than a short distance on a map might suggest. Ask the castle about access if steps are difficult for anyone in your group.
Adult admission is €13 including the municipal tax. The audio guide is an optional extra. Closing time changes with the season and last entry is earlier than closing, so check the official visitor page before deciding on a late start. Special events can have different admission arrangements.
Spend enough time in the rooms to make the ticket worthwhile, then return to town for lunch or a walk beside the Our. You do not need to build a busy list around the castle. Leaving an unplanned hour makes a delayed connection much less frustrating.
Use Ettelbruck as the connection
From Luxembourg City, take a suitable train to Ettelbruck and connect with RGTR bus 181 towards Vianden. Search the complete journey with your date and starting address. Works around stations and roads can alter the stop or connection even when the route number stays the same.
Domestic second-class rail and ordinary public buses are free. There is no advance-purchase discount to chase on these rides. First class is a different ticket, and a journey starting outside Luxembourg still needs the relevant cross-border fare. The route guide explains how to plan both directions.
Save a later return as well as your preferred one. This gives you room to stay longer in town without discovering that your evening plans depend on the final bus. If you have a flight or an international train that day, move Vianden to an earlier day or shorten the outing.
Decide whether a night adds anything
Staying overnight gives you a quieter evening after the day visitors leave and a choice of when to visit the castle. For a short first trip to Luxembourg, however, changing hotels for one night may add more packing than pleasure. Compare that choice with two nights in the capital and a return day trip.
