Luxembourg City is best explored at two levels: the squares and viewpoints above, then the streets beside the Alzette below. Give the hills some time, choose one paid interior and use the free tram for longer stretches.

Luxembourg is easy to enjoy from one base: spend time in the capital, give Vianden Castle a day and choose a town or trail outing around Echternach. Free domestic public transport helps, but rooms and sightseeing still need a budget.

One base can cover a short visit
Stay in Luxembourg City if you want the old town, railway connections and a choice of day trips without moving your bags. Give the upper town and valley separate parts of the day. The Corniche viewpoints, Grund streets and public lifts are worth time even when you do not buy a museum ticket.
Vianden is a castle outing with a train-and-bus connection. Plan the uphill approach as well as the ride. Echternach suits a town-and-lake day, or a longer stay if you want several Mullerthal walks. The waterfall at Schiessentümpel is outside Echternach, so it needs its own outing rather than a casual detour from the town square.
The three-day itinerary returns to the capital after both day trips. If you have only two days, choose either Vianden or Echternach. Trying to combine both with an evening departure gives away much of the time you hoped to spend there.
Understand what free transport covers
Ordinary domestic public buses, trams and second-class trains are free for visitors as well as residents. You do not need a visitor pass to unlock these rides. First-class rail still needs a ticket, and foreign sections of international journeys have their own fares and rules.
Use Mobiliteit's fare guidance and its journey planner for your exact stops. For Vianden, connect through Ettelbruck to bus 181. For Echternach, look at bus 201 and the stop closest to your plans. A free journey still needs time for waiting and the walk at either end.
The tram reaches Findel Airport. Check your hotel stop before boarding and use the airport section's own timetable, since services in the central part of the line can be more frequent. Taxis, sightseeing vehicles and attraction rides are separate products.
Pay for the interiors you want
The Bock Casemates ordinary adult ticket is €11. A guided Bock visit and a Pétrusse Casemates visit are different choices, with their own tickets. Vianden Castle adult admission is €13 including the municipal tax. Check the visitor calendars before arranging transport around either visit.
You can balance those interiors with public viewpoints, a river walk and time around Echternach. If considering an attraction pass, compare the actual entries you will use and any event exclusions. There is no transport saving to add for domestic rides that are already free.
Spend on the parts that matter to you
Room and meal prices are not fixed by the free-transport policy. Our spending examples use chosen allowances, including the €87 budget example shown for the capital. Replace the room figure with the complete booking price and count a private room once for the people sharing it.
Read the daily-cost example for the arithmetic and the food guide for ideas about where a local dish fits into your day. Carry a lunch for a longer trail if the route has few convenient food stops, and leave room for a relaxed meal back in town.
Where to look for better value
Compare the capital with smaller-town stays only after checking your evening and onward transport. The cheapest room on a map may not suit your day trips.
Where costs can rise
Central rooms, larger apartments and busy dates can raise the complete stay price. Compare both weekdays and weekends rather than assuming a fixed cheap season.
Ways to save in Luxembourg
Use domestic second-class trains, public buses and trams without buying a transport pass. Keep international tickets, paid sights and accommodation separate.

Vianden makes a good castle day from Luxembourg City, with time left for the river and town. The main effort comes after the bus ride: allow for the uphill approach instead of timing the visit from the town stop alone.
Echternach works for a gentle town-and-lake day or as a base for longer Mullerthal walks. Decide which sort of day you want before boarding the bus: the famous waterfall is a separate outing outside the town.
