Lyon daily costs for a food-focused city break

Plan Lyon spending with a sample daily budget, current local transport costs and room for the meals and museums you care about.

In Lyon, decide which meal you want to spend time and money on. A city break built around food does not require an expensive restaurant three times a day, but an unrealistically small food allowance will make the plan frustrating.

Keep your room bill, transport and chosen paid visits visible alongside the meals.

One possible day

This planning example is for one of two adults sharing a €100 room, including mandatory accommodation charges. Food and sightseeing amounts are allowances to replace with your own choices.

Item Per person
Room share €50
Breakfast and simple lunch €14
Dinner €28
TCL zones 1–2 travel allowance €6.90
Paid visit allowance €12
Small extras €5
Total €115.90

TCL’s contactless guidance lists a €6.90 daily cap for eligible zones 1–2 travel. The network now uses a wider zone system, so check current fare coverage for your actual route.

Do not treat that city amount as the price of every airport or regional journey. Those need their own ticket check.

Choose the meal that matters

Look for the complete menu price and what it includes. A lunch formula may give you a different choice and price from dinner at the same restaurant.

If you want a traditional bouchon meal, read the menu before booking. Some dishes are rich or contain offal, which may or may not be what you want. Choose for the food and setting rather than a generic claim that every “local” restaurant is cheap.

Markets can help with a picnic, but buying several small prepared items can cost more than expected. Add the whole basket before comparing it with a set lunch.

Mix walks with paid visits

The Presqu’île district guide gives ideas for a central walk. Crossing into Vieux Lyon or exploring Croix-Rousse changes the terrain, so leave time for hills and breaks.

Respect private passageways and closed gates when looking for traboules. A place appearing in a walking guide does not mean every entrance is open at all times.

Our Lyon accommodation guide compares the Presqu’île, Croix-Rousse and Part-Dieu. For a short stay, a base near your main plans can save repeated journeys even if the room costs a little more.
