Venice daily costs, from waterbuses to accommodation
Plan a Venice budget with current waterbus prices, clear room assumptions and the latest position on the city’s access fee.
Venice becomes easier to budget when you separate the room, everyday spending and boat travel. Walking can cover much of a city day, while repeated vaporetto journeys can make a transport pass worth considering.
A Mestre room needs a different calculation from one in the historic city.
A day with two waterbus journeys
This illustrative example assumes two adults share a €160 island room, including mandatory accommodation charges.

The official transport ticket page lists the ordinary ticket at €9.50 and the Venice Daily Pass at €25. Compare coverage and validity with your planned journeys before choosing.
The table is not a hotel or restaurant quote. Airport transport, intercity tickets and a gondola tour are excluded. On a walking day, you may spend less on boats.
Check admission rather than assuming it is free
Tourist visits to St Mark’s Basilica use paid ticket products. The official ticket office distinguishes the basilica and other parts of the complex. Choose what you want to see, then replace the sightseeing allowance with that price.
A traghetto is a short crossing of the Grand Canal at an operating crossing point. It is not a discounted version of a sightseeing gondola tour. Check the posted fare and hours locally rather than planning a whole route around it.
The current access-fee position
The municipal access-fee portal says the 2026 trial ended on 26 July. From 27 July, no access-fee payment or exemption request is required under that trial.
Accommodation tax is a separate matter. Future access-fee periods require a fresh check, so do not apply an old calendar to a later visit.
Compare Mestre with the full journey included
A cheaper mainland room can be worthwhile. Add the daily connection to Venice, the walk at each end and any waterbus journeys once there.

For food, compare complete menus away from the first table you see. A view can be worth paying for, provided it is a choice you have budgeted for.
A museum day can cost more
The example’s sight allowance does not buy every major interior. The standard adult Doge’s Palace museums ticket is €35, and St Mark’s Basilica is separate. Replace the allowance with the visits you actually choose.
