Venice is easier to enjoy with fewer appointments and a room whose location you understand. Walking takes you over bridges and along indirect lanes; boats help with longer gaps, luggage and island trips. A quiet canal walk can be as rewarding as another ticketed stop.

Plan around where you arrive
Venezia Santa Lucia is in the historic city; Venezia Mestre is on the mainland. A coach can arrive at Mestre or Tronchetto, while airport buses reach Piazzale Roma. These are different starting points. Before booking a room, trace the final walk and count bridges, especially if you have a suitcase or need a step-free route.

Group boat journeys together
An ACTV 75-minute waterbus ticket costs €9.50. A timed pass can help on a day with several rides, but the cheapest choice depends on your actual journeys. Read the operator's coverage: ordinary products exclude Alilaguna and travel to or from Marco Polo Airport unless that airport option is included.
For an island outing, start with one place you want to spend time in. Adding Murano and Burano simply because they share a map can turn a relaxed day into a series of waits at boat stops.
Choose the rooms you want to visit
The Doge's Palace belongs to the St Mark's museums ticket. Its ordinary adult price is €35, with a lower €30 advance offer subject to the museum's booking conditions. The basilica across the square uses its own tickets. Check which areas are included before paying for a combined-looking listing.

Check whether an access-fee day applies
Venice's 2026 day-visitor access-fee trial ended on 26 July. Outside designated charge days, the city says no payment or exemption registration is required. Future arrangements need a new announcement, so use the municipal access-fee portal for your dates. This fee is separate from accommodation tax, boat tickets and museum admission.

Doge’s Palace (Palazzo Ducale)
€35.00Booking and rates: The standard adult St Mark’s Square Museums ticket is €35 and includes Doge’s Palace. A qualifying advance purchase at least 30 days ahead may be €30. St Mark’s Basilica is a separate booking.

Cannaregio, Dorsoduro and Castello offer different bases within the historic city. Mestre may have a better room price, but add the mainland journey each day and check the late return.
Getting Around
Walk within a district and use ACTV boats when they save useful effort. A standard 75-minute waterbus ticket is €9.50. Alilaguna airport boats and ACTV airport transfers use separate products.

Choose a few cicchetti at a bacaro and ask the price if it is not displayed. Portions are snacks, so compare what makes a meal. A seated restaurant meal has different costs from a quick drink at the counter.
Worth Paying For
A visit to the Doge's Palace if you want to understand how Venice was governed. Allow time for the rooms and prison route, rather than buying solely for the outside view.
Skip / Save Your Money
A boat pass on a day spent mainly walking. Count the journeys first. A traghetto is a short canal crossing, not a substitute for a longer gondola ride.
