Where to stay in Venice or Mestre on a budget
Compare an island stay with Mestre, including transport, bridges, station access and the value of returning easily to your room.
Mestre can make a Venice trip more affordable, but compare the complete stay before choosing. A room saving may come with daily travel, while an island room can let you return for a break or enjoy an early walk without checking a timetable.
Neither choice is automatically better. The right answer depends on the room prices and how you want to use your time.
Staying in the historic city
An island base works particularly well when Venice itself is the focus for several days. Areas such as Cannaregio or Santa Croce can be worth comparing with the streets around San Marco.
Check the route from Venezia Santa Lucia station or Piazzale Roma to the entrance. Bridges can mean repeated steps with luggage, and a property’s floor may add another climb. A short map distance does not capture this.
Ask whether a waterbus stop would make arrival easier, then price that journey. The official Venice transport ticket page lists the different products; a land bus fare does not cover a vaporetto.
Mestre station or Mestre centre
These are different bases. Near Venezia Mestre railway station, check the walk to the platforms and trains to Venezia Santa Lucia. In central Mestre, a tram or bus may be the more useful connection.
The official Mestre station information helps you identify arrival options. Allow for walking at both ends and time waiting for the service. The train’s running time alone is not your hotel-to-sightseeing time.
If you want to stay out late in Venice, check the final return and its departure point before you book the room.
Compare three complete days
Use a simple worksheet: three nights’ accommodation, any tourist tax, the return journeys you need and the waterbus trips you actually intend to take. Some passes include several services, but coverage differs. Read the ACTV ticket conditions rather than counting the same ride twice.
Venice’s access contribution is separate from accommodation tax. The official access-fee portal confirms that the 2026 collection period has ended: from 27 July 2026, no access fee or exemption request is required. Check the portal again for a future-year visit rather than assuming the same dates will apply.
