• In the Lazio region (Rome), charging a "coperto" (cover charge per person) is technically prohibited by regional statute.
• However, restaurants are legally allowed to charge for bread (pane) if served, typically €1.50 to €2.50 per person. If you do not touch the bread basket, you may ask the waiter to remove it and take it off your bill.

Italian Tipping Etiquette
