Rome airport transfers: Fiumicino and Ciampino

Choose the right route from Fiumicino or Ciampino, comparing the full journey to your room as well as the airport fare.

On this page

For a room near Roma Termini, the Leonardo Express is a straightforward airport option. For another part of Rome, check the regional train before heading automatically to Termini. The right station can save you an extra metro ride or a long walk with bags.

Check the airport code first: Fiumicino is FCO; Ciampino is CIA. The main train advice below is for Fiumicino, with Ciampino options explained separately.

Leonardo Express for Termini

Trenitalia's Leonardo Express page lists the non-stop journey at about 32 minutes and the ordinary ticket at €14.

That fare is for the airport train. Budget separately for any bus, metro or taxi you need after reaching Termini. Check the rules for children, small groups and ticket changes if they apply to your journey.

Leave time to walk from arrivals to the airport station. The train ride may be short, but passport control, baggage collection and finding the platform still take time.

Regional trains for other parts of Rome

The airport's rail guide explains the difference between Leonardo Express and FL1 regional trains. FL1 serves other Rome stations, including Tiburtina, and does not go to Termini.

Enter your destination station in the current Trenitalia planner to see the fare and stops. If your accommodation suggests Trastevere or Ostiense, check the onward walk as well. A station's name can cover a wider area than the part of the neighbourhood you want to visit.

Read the instructions for the ticket format you buy. Paper and digital rail tickets may have different validation or validity rules, so follow the details on your own ticket.

Compare buses by the whole journey

An airport coach can be worth considering if its stop suits your room and you have enough time. Check the operator's current fare, baggage rules and what happens if your flight is late. A flexible ticket may be more useful than a slightly cheaper fixed departure.

Road traffic makes a bus arrival time less certain. Avoid connecting it to a tightly timed, separately booked onward train.

Before the return trip, check the exact pickup point and when you need to be at the terminal. Our Rome accommodation guide compares Monti, Trastevere and Termini, including the arrival details that are easy to miss when choosing a room from photographs.

If your flight uses Ciampino

Compare a direct airport coach with ATAC bus 520 or 720 and the onward metro. The €1.50 BIT is valid on those two buses and covers one metro journey within its 100-minute rules. Check the dated route and validate again at the metro entrance before the ticket expires. Allow for the bus wait and transfer; this is not the Fiumicino Leonardo Express.

Sharing a Fiumicino taxi

For a room within the Aurelian Walls, ADR lists a €55 fixed taxi fare per vehicle, including supplements. Confirm that the address qualifies and use the official rank. Four adults should also compare the Leonardo Express mini-group offer of four tickets for €40 in one purchase.

After choosing the airport route, use the Rome guide to plan the last journey to your accommodation.
