Rome works best as several neighbourhood days. Put the ancient sites together, give the Vatican its own block of time and leave the lanes around the Pantheon for an unhurried walk. The distances add up quickly if you cross the city between every stop.

Give each day a clear area
Start an ancient-Rome day at the Colosseum and leave enough time for the Forum and Palatine. On another day, link the Pantheon area, Piazza Navona and the river on foot. Prati and the Vatican belong together geographically, but the museums and basilica can still fill a long day. Two major timed entries with a tight gap between them make delays harder to absorb.

Keep museum tickets separate
The ordinary Colosseum ticket is €18. Read the named-ticket and time-slot rules, and bring the required ID. Arena and underground access belong to different products. Our Colosseum booking guide explains how to choose.
The Vatican Museums charge €20 for a standard adult admission, with a €5 fee when reserving through their official website. This includes the Sistine Chapel, not every Vatican experience. Use the Vatican Museums article for the entrance and booking details.
Leave money for the things you value
A day with a long paid visit can still have a simple lunch and a free evening walk. Our Rome budget example separates the stay, meals and admission choices so you can change them without counting the same cost twice.
The Trevi Fountain can be viewed from the surrounding public space. Entering the lower area close to the basin is a separate €2 visitor ticket during charging hours. Read the city's access information if you want that closer view.
Choose the airport connection for your address
Leonardo Express runs to Termini. The FL1 regional train serves other stations, including Trastevere and Ostiense, and does not go to Termini. The cheapest-looking arrival is less helpful if it leaves you with a long final transfer and luggage. Compare the options in our Rome airport guide.

Monti suits ancient Rome; Prati works well for the Vatican; Termini is useful for trains. In Trastevere, check the walk to transport and whether the room faces a busy evening street.
Getting Around
Use the metro for longer gaps, then walk within each area. The €1.50 BIT lasts 100 minutes and covers one metro journey. Airport trains need their own tickets.

A timed Colosseum visit if ancient Rome is a priority. The ordinary €18 ticket differs from arena and underground products, so choose the areas you actually want to enter.
Skip / Save Your Money
A sightseeing pass bought before you have chosen your visits. Add up the admissions and transport you will use, including any reservations, before comparing the pass price.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
A Vatican Museums ticket and a St Peter's Basilica visit are different plans. Check the entrance on your booking and leave time for security. Street ticket sellers are not a useful shortcut.
