May and October often appear in advice about travelling outside peak season. They can be good choices, especially for city walks, but they are not a mathematical sweet spot for the whole continent. Start with the trip you want, then see whether either month supports it.
May gives you a different kind of day

Write down what you would gain and give up. A lower price and cooler walking weather might outweigh fewer boat departures. For another traveller, a fully operating summer resort may be worth paying more for.
