Azerbaijan combines Baku and the Absheron Peninsula with the historic city of Sheki and longer journeys into the Caucasus foothills. Baku is the main arrival and transport hub. A trip beyond the capital needs a current rail or coach check, and any international land journey needs a separate eligibility and border check.

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and journey. Check the destination’s official immigration or consular guidance before booking.
Build the trip around Baku and one regional base
Use Baku for the Old City, the boulevard and a separately arranged Gobustan outing. Add Sheki when there is time for two nights or a well-timed overnight journey. The seven-day Azerbaijan plan keeps a final Baku night so a road or rail delay does not threaten the flight home.
For a shorter trip, keep one Baku base and choose Gobustan or the Absheron Peninsula. Do not force Baku, Gobustan and Sheki into two rushed days simply because they fit on one map.
Check entry, border access and the service separately
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs entry notice permits foreign visitors to enter by air. Ordinary land entry still requires Task Force permission. Since 25 May 2026, rail entry and exit between Azerbaijan and Georgia is permitted for foreign citizens who already have visa-free entry rights for Azerbaijan. That exception does not cover every passport and does not prove that a useful passenger train is running on your date. Foreign visitors may leave through a land border without that permission.
Use the official ASAN e-Visa conditions to check whether your passport is eligible. A standard e-visa takes three working days and an urgent application takes three hours. It is single entry, valid for 90 days, with permission to stay for 30 days. For a stay longer than 15 days, follow the State Migration Service registration guidance and ask the accommodation who will complete the free place-of-stay registration.
Compare the Sheki coach and sleeper by the complete journey
The official bus-terminal listing shows Baku to Sheki coaches taking about four hours, with the displayed departures listed at 13.60 AZN. The ADY Baku to Balakan sleeper leaves Baku at 23:50 and calls at Sheki at 06:05 under the timetable effective 1 April 2026. In the other direction it leaves Sheki at 00:41 and reaches Baku at 06:50.

Where to look for better value
Compare Sheki and rooms outside Baku Old City with central Baku for the same dates. Include the station or airport transfer, heating or cooling and all booking fees before calling a room cheaper.
Where costs can rise
Baku can rise around major events. Private Gobustan or Absheron trips, long-distance transport and a guide can change the total more than everyday food or metro spending.
Ways to save in Azerbaijan
Use Azerbaijani manat for local spending, check BakiKart and current transport rules at the official source, and compare a current coach with the Baku to Balakan sleeper for Sheki. Keep airport, intercity and guided outing costs outside the daily city allowance.

Sheki is a historic Caucasus foothill city known for the Khan's Palace, caravanserai, crafts and a green setting. The visitor area is compact but sloping, while the railway station and some countryside sights are well outside the centre.
