Pair Knossos with the museum, without rushing either
Knossos costs €20 for an ordinary adult ticket. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is another €20. They are separate products, so the two visits add up to €40 before bus travel or a guide.
The palace is an outdoor visit with uneven surfaces and exposed sections. Choose a cooler time when possible. The museum gives you a different kind of visit in the city centre, and works well as its own block with a meal or break between the two. Check each venue's opening arrangements rather than assuming matching hours.
Buy the city bus ticket for the actual journey
Heraklion Urban Bus publishes a €1.30 Zone A single bought before boarding, compared with €2.30 on the bus. Journeys crossing into Zone B use a different fare. The airport-to-centre journey is within Zone A; a ticket for a farther suburban stop may not be.
For Knossos, use the current route 2 information and confirm the stop for the palace. Do not board solely because a bus passes near the harbour: several services share parts of the central area.
Choose a room around the arrival you have
The airport code is HER. Check it against CHQ, Chania's airport, before booking a transfer across Crete. If you arrive by ferry, use the berth on the confirmation and establish the walk or ride to your room. Port access and city-centre streets are different parts of the journey.
Ask about luggage storage after checkout if your sailing leaves late. Keeping a small bag for the day can make the museum or a central walk more comfortable than carrying everything until boarding.
Use the westbound coach as a travel day
The Heraklion–Chania route runs across the north coast via the Rethymno area. Regular and express departures can have different stops. Check the exact bus station and whether the chosen departure requires a change, particularly at the end of the day.

Getting Around
Urban buses serve the airport and Knossos, while intercity KTEL coaches handle longer journeys. Buy the correct zone ticket before boarding when possible, as the onboard price is higher.
