While Crete is 260 kilometers long, its northern coast is linked by the National Road and serviced by modern, air-conditioned KTEL coaches.

The Northern Highway Corridor

KTEL Chanion-Rethymnou coaches run hourly departures between Chania, Rethymno, and Heraklion:

• Chania to Rethymno: 1h 15m (€7.30).
• Rethymno to Heraklion: 1h 15m (€8.80).
• Chania to Heraklion (Direct): 2h 45m (€15.10).

Hiking Samaria Gorge Without a Car

Samaria Gorge is a 16-kilometer one-way trek starting high in the White Mountains (Omalos) and finishing at the sea in Agia Roumeli, where there are no roads. Attempting to drive your own rental car leaves your vehicle stranded 1,200 meters above.

• The Public Transit Loop: Take the 06:15 or 07:45 AM KTEL bus from Chania bus station to Omalos / Xyloskalo (€7.50). Hike through the gorge to Agia Roumeli (5 to 6 hours, €5 park entry). Take the afternoon passenger ferry from Agia Roumeli to Sougia or Chora Sfakion (€13.00). The connecting KTEL bus will be waiting at the dock to take you back to Chania.
