Klaipėda Travel Guide
Klaipėda gives you a city base with the sea close by. Spend one day around the Old Town and harbour, then cross to Smiltynė for forest paths and the beach. Nida is a longer outing that needs an onward bus, not just the ferry.

Use Klaipėda as a coast base
Klaipėda is useful when you want the sea without changing accommodation for every outing. The Old Town, harbour walks and Smiltynė can fill two days comfortably. Add a third for Palanga or Nida, depending on whether you prefer a mainland resort or the Curonian Spit.
For the city day, start in Theatre Square and explore the timber-framed streets around Aukštoji and Didžioji Vandens. Continue towards the Danė river and castle area when you want a longer walk. These places are close enough to group together, so you can stop for lunch without crossing town repeatedly.
Choose the correct ferry terminal
The Old Ferry is the central option for passengers and bikes. The New Ferry also carries motor vehicles and is farther south. Both cross the lagoon to Smiltynė. International ferries use different terminal arrangements; follow the details on that particular booking.
Smiltynės perkėla's fare table lists €1.70 for a pedestrian return ticket, also available for a passenger with a bicycle. Keep the ticket for the return. It does not pay for an onward bus or admission to an attraction.
Make Smiltynė a day of its own
After the crossing, choose between the Sea Museum area and the walk through the forest towards the Baltic beach. If you want both, start with the indoor visit and leave the beach flexible. Check the museum's current admission products before buying, especially if you are considering a separate performance.
Carry water, a layer for the wind and whatever you need for the beach. Before staying out for sunset, check the return ferry. A short crossing still depends on a timetable, and the journey from the sand to the landing takes time.
Nida needs an onward journey
For Klaipėda to Nida, the ferry is only the first stage. You then take a bus along the spit, with separate tickets and waiting time. A direct through-coach may be another option on your date. Start early if you are returning the same evening and choose a modest plan in Nida rather than trying to visit every village on the way.
Pick accommodation around your departure
An Old Town address works well for dinners and the passenger ferry. A station-area room may suit an early train, but check the route to the centre rather than judging distance from the hotel name. If arriving from Palanga Airport, use the airport-serving departure of route 31 and check where to get off.
The budgets below are selected spending plans. Replace the room amount with the actual booking cost, then add whichever coast outing you choose. For a couple sharing one room, divide that room cost once; do not double it by treating each traveller as a separate booking.
Example spending plans
Use these room and meal budgets to plan a day. They are spending choices, not average prices or available room offers. Replace the room amount with your full booking price, including tax. If sharing, divide only the private-room cost. Airport and intercity travel are extra.
A bed, simple meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
A private room, meals, local travel and an activity allowance.
More room for accommodation, meals and paid sightseeing.
Example for one traveller using one individual bed. Chosen allowances, not measured averages or available offers. Replace them with your bookings. Add intercity and airport travel separately. Replace the activity allowance with chosen admissions rather than counting both. An individual bed is not guaranteed; use the whole-room quote if that is what you book.

Old Town and Danė river walk
€0.00🛏️ Where to Stay
The Old Town suits evening walks and the passenger ferry. Staying near the bus and railway stations makes onward travel easier. Compare the actual walking route if you arrive with luggage.
🚇 Getting Around
Walk around the compact Old Town, then use the Old Ferry for Smiltynė on foot or with a bike. Cars use the New Ferry; neither crossing takes you all the way to Nida.
Airport transfers
Choose an airport departure towards Klaipėda, via Palanga. Confirm the dated service and stop near your accommodation. Airport and town-only workings differ. Check the fare to Klaipėda; this is not the short ride to Palanga resort.
🥖 Eating for Less
Choose lunch around your city walk and carry food if you plan a long beach day. Near the harbour, compare menus by the full meal rather than assuming every waterfront restaurant has the same price level.
Worth Paying For
The €1.70 pedestrian ferry ticket covers the return crossing to Smiltynė. Keep a Sea Museum visit or the bus to Nida as a separate budget item.
Skip / Save Your Money
Do not try to fit a museum in Smiltynė, a Nida excursion and a late train into one day. Choose the nearby beach or a full day farther down the spit.
Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Smiltynė, Nida and the international ferry terminals are different places. Read the terminal name on your ticket before choosing a taxi or setting off with your bags.
