Choosing your journey

Plan around 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours on a suitable direct train. Check whether Dresden Hbf or Dresden-Neustadt is better for your accommodation. Compare the actual departure and ticket conditions before paying.

A short train journey that suits an overnight stop

Berlin and Dresden work well together because you can travel without losing the whole day. Allow roughly 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours on a suitable direct service, plus time for the stations and your room. DB's route planner shows the trains for your date; engineering work can change the usual pattern.

An overnight stay gives you time for the Elbe in the evening. If you are continuing to Prague the same day, compare a through journey with a planned stop before buying separate restrictive tickets.

Choose the useful Dresden station

Berlin Hbf is the starting point on this route. In Dresden, Hbf and Dresden-Neustadt are different stations. Check the service and your accommodation address. Leaving the train at the right station can matter more than a small saving on the fare.

Keep your ticket and seat reservation available offline. Follow the platform display for coach positions, and leave bags where they do not block doors or aisles. A seat reservation is worth considering when you want to sit together.

Booking and your first afternoon

Compare the same departure and fare conditions through DB or the operating railway. A price in a different currency is not automatically cheaper after payment charges. The lowest advertised fare may be unavailable on your date, and the Deutschland-Ticket guide explains why it does not normally cover these long-distance trains.

Leave your bags before exploring Neumarkt, the river and one museum. Keep a timed visit flexible enough to allow for a late train. Our Dresden guide helps choose between the old centre and Neustadt. A Bastei outing needs a separate block of time, not just the short train ride to the edge of the walking route.

If Prague is the real destination and Dresden is optional, compare this stop with the direct Berlin to Prague train. A through journey avoids a second hotel check-in, but a Dresden stay deserves its own time rather than a rushed platform break.
