Choosing your journey

A direct domestic train is a practical choice, taking about an hour on a suitable service. Allow time to get from Bruges station into the centre and give the city a full day. Check the fare for your date and eligibility.

Give Bruges a full day

A direct domestic train is a practical first choice for Brussels to Bruges. Allow about an hour on a suitable service, plus the journey from Bruges station into the centre. This is an easy day trip, but the train time is only one part of it. Keep the morning clear rather than fitting Bruges around another city.

Choose your Brussels station around your starting address. Midi/Zuid, Central and North appear under French and Dutch names in different places. Check that the departure you select calls at the station you plan to use. At the other end, Brugge and Bruges refer to the same city.

Buy for the journey you are taking

Use the SNCB planner to check the service and current ticket for your date. Ordinary Belgian domestic travel does not use the advance seat reservation model of an international high-speed train. Buy before boarding and read the ticket's route, date and class conditions.

The old advice to expect every weekend return to be half price is no longer reliable. Check the current weekend conditions, including your age and any subscription, before comparing the total. Brussels city transport and the local bus in Bruges need their own valid tickets.

Leave time beyond the platform

From Bruges station, you can walk into the historic centre or take a local bus. With a small bag and comfortable weather, make the walk part of your visit. If staying overnight, arrange luggage storage before booking an early arrival. A hotel room may not be ready just because the train arrived in the morning.

Plan one main paid visit, then use the rest of the day for the canals, a meal and the quieter streets. A Belfry booking immediately after the scheduled arrival leaves little room for a delay or a slow walk. Our Bruges guide helps you choose the order.

Coming back or moving on

Check the return service before settling into dinner. If continuing to Ghent, buy the journey you will actually take rather than assuming a Brussels return covers it. Compare an overnight stay with a day trip in Bruges or Ghent.
