Grand-Place is the obvious starting point, but Brussels becomes more interesting as you move into its neighbourhoods. The Marolles flea market, musical instruments at the MIM and a meal away from the square offer quite different visits. Keep outlying sights for a separate half-day.

A walking day with a useful transport backup
Start near Grand-Place, then head towards the Marolles for the Place du Jeu de Balle flea market. It runs daily. Expect second-hand objects and antiques, with cafés around the square for a break. Leave space in the afternoon for one indoor visit rather than trying to cross the whole city.
For ordinary city journeys, STIB contactless payment is useful when you do not know how much you will ride. Two separate journeys total €4.80; four reach the €8.50 daily cap. Keep using the same card or device and validate at each connection. Transfers within 60 minutes of the first tap do not start another paid journey.
Match the ticket to the operator
That cap belongs to STIB. A train to Leuven, a De Lijn bus or a special airport fare is a separate purchase. When a journey planner gives several options, read the operator as well as the departure time.
Choose your room around the station you will use and the evenings you want. Bruxelles-Central is a convenient starting point for the old centre. Bruxelles-Midi is a different arrival area: a low room price there is useful only if the location also works for your stay.
Hear the collection at the MIM
The Musical Instruments Museum includes a multimedia guide in admission. That makes it a good choice if you want to hear how unfamiliar instruments sound. Its standard ticket is €18; the first Wednesday of the month is free from 1pm. The rooftop restaurant is closed for renovation, so plan lunch elsewhere.

For a short first visit, look between Bruxelles-Central and the old centre. For an early international train, a room near Bruxelles-Midi may simplify departure, but inspect the actual walk and late check-in details. The two station names are not interchangeable.
Getting Around
Use the same bank card or device on STIB throughout the day. Ordinary contactless journeys cost €2.40, transfers within 60 minutes belong to that journey, and the daily cap is €8.50. Validate again when you change vehicles. Airport travel and other operators need their own fare choice.

Price for your journeyThe reviewed airport-to-Brussels Central trains take about 17–23 minutes on board; allow separately for waiting and the airport walk. Fewer trains run during the published 3–18 October 2026 works, so check the dated departure rather than assume a train every ten minutes. Airport trains also serve Nord and Midi/Zuid. Select Brussels Airport-Zaventem and your age or discount eligibility in SNCB’s planner. Ordinary airport tickets include the airport supplement; pass rules can differ. Keep the ticket for the airport gates and check both directions for a return.

€7.90 - €8.40From Brussels Airport to the city, bus 12 costs €7.90 by contactless payment or €8.40 for a paper ticket. The return to the airport accepts an ordinary STIB ticket. Check the stops and last departure for your date.

In the Marolles, combine the daily Place du Jeu de Balle flea market with lunch nearby. This is a second-hand market, not a food market, so use the surrounding cafés or a takeaway counter for the meal rather than expecting grocery stalls.

Common Tourist Traps & Money Mistakes
Keep your phone and physical bank card separate as tickets even if they use the same bank account. Use the original device at every validation and when an inspector asks for it. Switching halfway through the day can break the cap calculation.
