Choosing your journey
Allow roughly 35 to 40 minutes on a suitable direct train to Gent-Sint-Pieters, then time for local transport into the historic centre. This works as a day trip or the start of a longer Ghent stay.

Plan for Ghent's station location
Brussels to Gent-Sint-Pieters is a short domestic rail journey, often around 35 to 40 minutes on a suitable direct train. Gent-Sint-Pieters is not in the historic centre, so allow another part of the morning for local transport and luggage. A quick train does not mean you can arrive at a canal-side museum at the same time.
Select a Brussels station that suits your accommodation and check the train's calling points. Bruxelles-Midi is also called Brussel-Zuid. If arriving on an international train, leave a sensible connection margin for finding the next platform, especially with bags.
Ticket choices
The SNCB planner gives the current departure and fare. Ordinary domestic tickets do not reserve a particular seat. Read the date, route and class printed on the ticket and buy before getting on. The price range here is a planning estimate from an earlier check, not an offer for your date.
If travelling with a group, price each person's eligibility correctly. A youth fare, an adult weekend fare and a subscription fare are not interchangeable. A city transport ticket also does not replace a rail ticket. Avoid buying a multi-journey product until you have priced the trips you will actually make.
Finish the journey to the centre
At Gent-Sint-Pieters, use the De Lijn route planner for your hotel or first stop. Check the current service instead of relying on old directions that always name tram 1. Works can change the useful route. Walking is an option if you want a longer approach, but it is less appealing when carrying luggage in rain.
If you have one day, choose either the castle or the Ghent Altarpiece as the main booking. Leave room around it for the quays, lunch and the streets near Patershol. Staying overnight gives you more freedom over dinner and the next morning. Our Ghent guide sets out the choices.
A useful base for the next stop
Ghent can work as a base for Bruges, so compare the extra train journey with another hotel move. The Bruges and Ghent comparison is useful if you are choosing where to sleep. For a trip that visits four cities in order, follow the Belgium itinerary.
