Choosing your journey

Leuven makes a manageable day trip, often around 20 to 30 minutes from Brussels on a suitable direct train. Search for Leuven, not Louvain-la-Neuve, and plan around the Town Hall closure.

A manageable day outside Brussels

Leuven is a straightforward domestic train trip from Brussels, often around 20 to 30 minutes on a suitable direct service. It suits a day when you want a smaller centre, a university visit and time for lunch. You can return to the same Brussels hotel without turning the day into a long transport exercise.

Check the train's actual starting station and stops. Some services call at several Brussels stations, so use the one that makes sense from your accommodation. Search for Leuven. Louvain-la-Neuve is a different place and is not the destination for this guide.

Set the walking route before booking visits

From Leuven station, follow Bondgenotenlaan towards the centre. The library area and Grote Markt fit well into the morning. Keep the Great Beguinage for later rather than crossing back and forth. Leuven Town Hall is closed for restoration, so plan for the square and another indoor attraction instead of an interior tour.

The Leuven city guide has the closure details and official visitor links. Choose the library or M Leuven if you want one main paid visit. A timed entry should leave room for getting from the station and putting down any luggage.

Buying the train ticket

Use the SNCB planner for the current departure and fare, then buy before boarding. Ordinary domestic travel does not need an advance seat reservation. Read the date, route and class conditions on your ticket. The fare range here is an earlier planning estimate and should not be treated as a price promise.

A Brussels city ticket does not cover the intercity train. If you will use several trains during the holiday, compare the real journeys before buying a subscription or pass. The Belgium ticket article gives background, while the operator's current rules determine the ticket you need.

Return to Brussels or continue west

For a day trip, check a few return departures before settling into dinner. If Leuven is an overnight stop, arrange luggage storage before arrival. You can continue by train to Ghent, allowing about an hour on a suitable direct service and more time to reach its historic centre. The four-day Belgium itinerary uses this order and keeps the journey separate from the day's spending allowance.
