Compare ICE and regional journeys separately. A regional day ticket normally does not cover ICE travel. Check its time and group rules, and use the current timetable rather than assuming the fastest duration applies to all trains. |
Choosing your journey
Allow around 1 hour 15 minutes to 1½ hours on a suitable ICE. Regional trains are slower and need their own timetable check. Compare the ticket valid for the actual train, especially when using a regional pass.

Fast trains and regional trains are separate choices
From München Hbf to Nürnberg Hbf, allow roughly 1 hour 15 minutes to 1½ hours on a suitable ICE. The DB journey page gives current departures. Regional services take longer; inspect their journey time and changes rather than applying the ICE figure to a regional ticket.
If you already have a valid regional pass, the slower journey may suit you. If your time is limited, compare an ICE fare with the sightseeing time it gives back. Neither option is always the cheapest for every person and date.
Before buying a pass
Check the region, train category, number of travellers and any weekday starting-time restriction. A ticket that covers local travel does not automatically cover an ICE simply because both stations are in Bavaria. Our Deutschland-Ticket guide explains the national subscription's main limits.
Read the long-distance fare conditions if choosing ICE. Include a reservation in the comparison if sitting together matters, and confirm the departure station and platform before boarding.
Day trip or overnight stay
Nürnberg Hbf sits beside the southern edge of the old town. For a day trip, start with the old-town walk and choose one main paid visit. The castle end is uphill, so give yourself time to return rather than judging the route only by its distance on a map.
A night in Nuremberg leaves room for a museum or a more substantial historical visit the following day. Our Nuremberg guide separates the old-town day from those choices. Check your room's luggage arrangements before visiting a site with restrictions on large bags.
Keep the intercity ticket outside the daily spending allowance. Compare rooms and local costs for your dates, particularly during fairs or the Christmas-market season.
