How to find cheaper European trips
Choose affordable European destinations by comparing a complete trip, with practical shortlists and a method that avoids misleading country rankings.
The cheapest European country on a list may not give you the cheapest holiday. A low-cost room does little to help if getting there requires an expensive flight and a private transfer. Compare the complete trip before choosing the destination.
A useful shortlist, not a league table
For a city break, compare places such as Kraków, Bucharest, Sarajevo and Chișinău against the cities already on your wish list. For a coastal trip, look at specific bases in Albania or Montenegro outside the busiest dates. These are places worth pricing, not a claim that each is always cheaper than Western Europe.
Countrywide statistics can provide context. Eurostat's price-level comparisons measure baskets of goods and services, not the cost of your particular hotel, flights and attractions. A national index should not be presented as a tested daily tourist budget.
A popular resort in a generally lower-cost country can still be expensive in August. A less central district in a pricier city may offer a better room deal on your dates.
Compare one identical trip
Choose a common test: two adults, four nights, one private room, the same cancellation terms and a similar amount of sightseeing. Record the total room price rather than confusing the room cost with the cost per person.
For example, suppose Destination A has a €280 room total, €320 return travel for two and €240 for food, local journeys and visits. The trip totals €840, or €420 each. Destination B has a €400 room total, €160 return travel and the same €240 spending allowance. It totals €800, or €400 each.
These are illustrative figures, not bookable offers. They show how a destination with more expensive accommodation can still produce the cheaper holiday.
Look for the cost that dominates
For a short break, arrival travel often deserves attention first. For a two-week stay, accommodation and how frequently you move between bases can matter more. For a solo traveller, the availability of a suitable single room or hostel bed changes the comparison again.

Leave a small reserve for costs you have not settled. If reaching the cheapest room requires a late taxi or losing much of your first day, paying slightly more for a simpler trip may be the better use of the same holiday budget.
