Chișinău is the practical starting point for Moldova, with parks, markets, museums and wine bars spread across a leafy centre. It also holds the airport, rail station and several different bus stations, so the address on a ticket matters.

Moldova suits a short trip built around Chișinău, one carefully arranged wine visit and either Orheiul Vechi or Soroca. Public transport reaches many towns, but the correct bus station and the final village connection matter more than an old fare or timetable.

Keep the route compact enough for the transport available
Chișinău is the practical base for a first visit. Give the capital a full day, arrange one winery visit in advance and then choose either Orheiul Vechi or Soroca according to the time available. Orheiul Vechi can work as a day trip or village overnight. Soroca is a longer road journey and is better with an overnight when the return is weak.
A five-day trip can include Chișinău, one cellar and both regional stops only after the connections are confirmed. If Orheiul Vechi to Soroca requires a difficult change or a return through the capital, remove Soroca rather than spending most of the day waiting with luggage.
Identify the right station and final village
Moldova Travel explains that Chișinău has Central, North and South bus stations. The correct one depends on the destination. For Orheiul Vechi, confirm Butuceni or Trebujeni; modern Orhei town is not the same arrival. Ask a guesthouse how the last part works before booking.
Moldova's domestic rail network is limited. For Iași or Bucharest, compare the current train with road transport and read the exact arrival station. Border time belongs in every international estimate.
Book wine visits and follow current safety advice
A cellar visit normally requires a reservation and a confirmed transfer. Ask about language, tasting, food, duration and the return. A city tasting is a useful alternative when an outside visit does not fit.
Current official advice is against all travel to Transnistria, so it is not included in these routes. The budget examples exclude airport travel, cellar packages, private drivers and international tickets.
Where to look for better value
Compare Chișinău with a village guesthouse at Orheiul Vechi only after adding the transfer, meals and cancellation terms. A lower room quote does not prove the whole stay is cheaper.
Where costs can rise
Private winery transport, guided cellar visits and long same-day road trips can cost more than an ordinary day in Chișinău. Price them separately.

City guides in Moldova
The useful visitor base is the Orheiul Vechi cultural landscape around Butuceni and Trebujeni, not simply modern Orhei town. Cave monasteries, river views and village guesthouses make this either a full day from Chișinău or a quiet overnight.
Soroca sits on the Dniester in northern Moldova and is best known for its stone fortress. The road journey from Chișinău makes it a long day, so an overnight can be more comfortable when the current connection works.
