Take the train to Delft station
Allow about an hour on a suitable train from Amsterdam Centraal to Delft. Check the NS planner for your travel date and any change; Amsterdam Zuid may be useful for a different starting address. Do not choose Delft Campus for the old centre simply because it has Delft in its name.
From Delft station, walk towards the canals and Markt. Leave time to find your hotel or arrange luggage storage before a booked church visit. If you are coming for a day, a light bag makes the smaller streets and any stairs easier to manage.
Pay for the journey you need
Ordinary domestic services do not require seat reservations. An NS ticket or eligible OVpay card can cover the train, with check-in and check-out rules worth reading before travel. Each person needs their own card or device when using OVpay. Local buses and trams are separate journeys.
Buying weeks ahead is not a general requirement for a standard domestic ticket. Read the terms if you find a special off-peak offer, since it may restrict when you can travel.
Make a day of the canals
Start around Markt, choose the church interiors or a tower climb, then leave the afternoon for smaller streets and Oostpoort. Church admission and tower tickets differ, and the climb can close in bad weather. The Delft guide explains those choices and how to compare pottery purchases.
For less time on trains, visit from The Hague or stay in Delft itself. Our six-day rail trip connects the cities without treating every stop as a return journey from Amsterdam. Read the OVpay guide if this is your first trip using Dutch contactless transport.
