Cabin liquids rules at EU airports

For a flight from an EU airport, the common cabin rule allows liquids in individual containers with a capacity no greater than 100 ml. The containers go in one transparent, resealable plastic bag with a maximum capacity of one litre.

The container size matters, not the amount left inside. A partly used 200 ml bottle is still larger than the stated limit. Drinks, gels, creams, toothpaste and aerosols can all fall within the liquid rules.

Pack for the security check

• Use containers marked 100 ml or less.
• Put them in one transparent one-litre bag.
• Keep the bag easy to remove if the airport asks for it separately.
• Put larger ordinary containers in checked baggage.

Official guidance lists exceptions for necessary medicines and baby food. Security staff may ask for supporting information or inspect the items, so keep them accessible and carry only what is reasonably needed for the journey.

Duty-free liquids can have separate treatment when the item and receipt remain sealed in the security bag supplied at purchase. A security officer may need to open and reseal it, especially during a connection. Follow the instructions given at the airport.

Airport equipment can differ

Some airports use newer scanners, but local procedures can change and a connecting airport may apply the common limit. Pack to the published rule for every departure and transfer unless the airport gives current official instructions that clearly say otherwise.
