Albania works best as a few connected bases rather than a race along the whole coast. Tirana links well with Berat and Shkodër, while Gjirokastër, Sarandë, Ksamil and Himarë form a useful southern route. Buses remain the main public transport between these places. Check the departure point and current timetable before every move.
Entry requirements depend on your nationality and journey. Check the destination’s official immigration or consular guidance before booking.
A first week can combine Tirana, Berat and Gjirokastër before continuing to Sarandë. Add Ksamil and Butrint as outings from Sarandë, or stay farther along the Riviera if beach time is the main aim. Shkodër and the Albanian Alps belong to a different northern branch and deserve extra nights rather than a rushed detour.

Use eTransport for official bus lines, stations and schedules. Tirana has different departure points, so save the map pin and allow time to reach the right terminal. On less frequent coastal or cross-border journeys, confirm the last useful departure before booking a non-refundable room.
The Tirana airport bus runs around the clock on its city line, but regional airport services use their own times. A city ticket, an intercity fare and an airport journey are separate costs.
The Riviera route includes Vlorë, Himarë, Sarandë and Ksamil, but the road is not a string of neighbouring city streets. A hotel above the beach, a bus stop on the main road and the water can be three different locations. In the Alps, treat the Koman ferry, valley transfers and the Valbona to Theth walk as separate bookings.

Ksamil, Sarandë and the Riviera can cost more in the busiest summer weeks. Compare the complete stay, including beach access, transfers, tax and cleaning, instead of assuming the whole country has one low price.
Keep a working amount of Albanian lek, read any ATM fee before confirming, and use the official eTransport planner for current bus stations and departures. Stay several nights in one coastal base rather than paying for repeated transfers.
Tirana is a lively capital with museums, broad squares, neighbourhood cafes and the main transport connections for much of Albania. Keep the centre walkable by grouping Skanderbeg Square, Blloku and one museum, then give Dajti or another outer visit a separate half day.
Berat is a historic city on both sides of the Osum River, with Mangalem below the citadel, Gorica opposite and the inhabited Kala above. The slopes and stone lanes make a small map feel larger, especially with luggage.
Gjirokastër rises steeply from the Drino valley to its castle and old bazaar. The stone houses and lanes are the reason to stay, but the climb from the highway bus stop must be part of the arrival plan.
Sarandë is the main southern-coast transport and service base, facing Corfu and close to Ksamil and Butrint. The waterfront is easy to understand, but many rooms climb sharply behind it and summer traffic affects short journeys.
Shkodër is a northern cultural base near Lake Shkodër and Rozafa Castle, and the main planning point for Theth, Koman and Valbona journeys. The city itself deserves time before or after the mountain route.
Ksamil is a compact coastal resort near small islands and Butrint. Its beaches are popular and heavily managed in summer, so the practical questions are access, shade, price and how you will return to Sarandë.
Vlorë combines an important independence history with a long waterfront and access to the southern coast. The historic centre, Lungomare and departure points for Riviera buses or boat trips are not all in one place.
Himarë is a useful Riviera base with a waterfront town, nearby beaches and an older hilltop settlement. Those places need different walks or transport, so choose a room for the part of the coast you will use most.
