Stay for the evening, or plan a full day
San Marino is more enjoyable when the climb up Monte Titano is part of the plan rather than a hurried stop between trains. A full day works from Rimini. One night gives you time for the old centre after the day visitors leave and a less rushed look at the towers.
Start with the historic-centre guide. Borgo Maggiore is the market town below it, linked by cable car. Montegiardino offers a quieter village outing if you have extra time. The country's nine castelli are administrative districts; they are not nine admission-ticket castles to collect.
Arrive through Rimini
The international Bonelli and Benedettini bus links Rimini railway station with San Marino's Ex Stazione, Park 2 Bus stop. The full ride takes about 55 minutes on the published timetable and costs €7 single. A booked ticket guarantees carriage on that departure, not a seat. Check the current timetable and stops before choosing the connecting train.
Our Bologna route and Rome route explain the combined train-and-bus journey. Neither train takes you into San Marino itself. If staying in Borgo Maggiore, check the appropriate stop and fare rather than riding to the final stop by habit.
Separate three transport systems
The international bus, domestic buses and cable car have different tickets. The Borgo–historic-centre cable car costs €4 single or €7 return for a standard adult ticket under the current AASS tariff.
For a village outing, SMUVI is a shared, bookable bus between designated stops. Domestic bus travel is temporarily free through 30 September 2026. That trial does not make the cable car or Rimini service free, and it should not be assumed to continue afterwards.
Choose the towers and museums you want
The standard state-museum circuit ticket is €11. Eligible overnight visitors can ask their San Marino accommodation for the TuttoSanMarino Card, which reduces that ticket to €8. Read the current offer and closures: Palazzo Pubblico is listed as closed to visitors through 30 September 2026, so do not plan its interior without checking reopening.
Use the two-day Borgo and San Marino plan for one hotel night and clear spending assumptions. Food, room and transport allowances are adjustable examples. Check documents for travel through Italy, and keep a souvenir stamp separate from immigration records.
