UK mobile roaming in Europe

A UK mobile plan can include European roaming, charge a daily fee or bill by usage. The word Europe in a plan name does not prove that every country on the trip is covered.

Ofcom advises travelers to check the provider's published roaming charges and packages before leaving. The arrival message should explain charges and usage limits, but it is safer to save the current tariff before the first connection abroad.

Check these plan details

• the exact country list, including islands and overseas territories
• the daily charge or bundle price
• the data fair-use allowance
• call and text destinations included
• tethering or hotspot limits
• the renewal time and time zone for a daily pass
• the bill limit and usage alerts

Ferries, cruise ships and aircraft can connect a phone to a satellite or onboard network that is not part of the land roaming package. Border areas can also cause accidental roaming. Ofcom specifically warns that a phone near a border may join a network in the neighbouring country.

Compare an eSIM without guessing

For an eSIM, check the same countries, data amount, validity period, tethering policy and network type. A low price is less useful if the plan excludes the next country or cannot receive a call needed for account verification.

Use Trip Cost Check for the cash comparison. Add the UK provider's roaming charge to one option and the eSIM price, activation fee and any needed voice credit to the other. Keep coverage and reliability as notes rather than inventing a euro value.
