Dynamic currency conversion at an ATM
An ATM may offer to convert the withdrawal into your home currency. Compare the displayed quote with local-currency processing before accepting it.
Dynamic currency conversion, often shortened to DCC, lets an ATM show a withdrawal in your home currency. The displayed certainty does not prove that the exchange rate is competitive.
Read the screen before confirming
The ATM should show its operator fee and currency-conversion information before the withdrawal is completed. Look for the local amount, the home-currency amount, the exchange rate and any stated markup.
Choosing local currency normally leaves conversion to your card provider. That option can still have an ATM operator fee, a card cash-withdrawal fee and a foreign-exchange markup. Check the card fee schedule rather than assuming it is free.
Compare the two offers
For local-currency processing, enter:
- cash amount in local currency
- a reference rate in home currency per local unit
- ATM fixed and percentage fees
- card fixed fee and exchange markup
For DCC, enter the final home-currency amount displayed by the ATM. The ATM Fee Calculator shows the difference without fetching a live rate.
Keep the limits clear
The reference rate is a comparison input, not a promise of the final card rate. A pending card transaction can settle at a different time. Your provider may also apply a fee that the ATM cannot show.
If the screen is unclear, cancel before confirming and use another machine. Keep the receipt and a photo of the disclosed terms if a charge later differs from what was shown.
