Tourist tax and city-pass costs
Accommodation tax and a sightseeing pass are separate costs. Check the local tax basis and price only the attractions you plan to use.
Tourist tax is usually set locally, while a city pass is an optional product. Do not treat either as a universal country charge. Check the municipality and the exact pass sold for your dates.
Amsterdam provides a clear example of why local checking matters. Its official municipal page states the tax basis and rate for covered accommodation, while the official city-card page explains activation, durations, transport scope and attractions that may require a timeslot. Another city can use a nightly amount, a percentage, exemptions or a different collection method.
Check the accommodation total
Ask the property whether tourist tax is included in the booking total. Record the rate basis, number of guests, number of nights and any age or purpose exemptions shown by the official municipality. If the tax is payable at check-in, keep it as a separate line in Trip Cost Check.
Price the pass from your plan
Open the official attraction and transport pages for the dates you will use them. In the City Pass Calculator, enter only places you genuinely plan to visit. Mark excluded attractions and record timed-entry or closure notes.
| Include in the calculation | Keep as a separate check |
|---|---|
| Pass price and mandatory fees | Opening days |
| Separate attraction prices | Timeslot availability |
| Included transport value | Geographic transport limits |
| Paid reservations | App or phone access requirements |
A long attraction list does not prove value. The pass wins only if your realistic plan costs more when bought separately, after reservation charges and transport differences. Recheck official prices before paying because city products and municipal taxes can change independently.
