Night train or flight and hotel
Compare the sleeper or couchette with the complete flight, airport transfers and any hotel night gained or lost.
Compare a night train with the journey the flight actually creates. The train price may include a reserved seat, couchette or bed, while the flight may need airport transfers and a hotel night.
Match the comfort level
A seat is not the same product as a sleeper cabin. Choose the night-train category you would buy and compare it with the flight and accommodation you would accept. ÖBB Nightjet offers different categories and states that reservation treatment depends on the ticket and service.
Record whether breakfast, bedding or a private compartment is included. Do not assign a cash value to comfort unless it replaces something you would otherwise buy.
Build both cash totals
For the night train, add the ticket, reservation or accommodation supplement, station access and food not included.
For the flight, add the fare, bags, seats, airport access, arrival transfer and food. Add a hotel only when the flight schedule creates a night you must pay for. If the train replaces a booked hotel, use a negative hotel adjustment and keep the amount visible.
The Flight vs Train tool compares active journey time with waiting and buffer time. Trip Cost Check is better when you need a hotel adjustment.
Check arrival usefulness
An early train arrival may be valuable only if luggage storage or check-in is available. A late flight may save daytime but lose public transport at the destination. Compare the time at which you can usefully reach the final address.
Book popular sleepers and couchettes only after checking availability. A theoretical fare is not a usable comparison if the category is sold out.
