Plan around your booked visits, leave room for rain and holidays, and use a quieter outdoor day to balance the busiest sights.
April, May and October can be comfortable months for exploring Rome on foot, but they are still popular travel periods. Plan the visits you most want to make, then leave enough space around them for the city itself. A pleasant temperature does not make a rushed itinerary easier to enjoy.
Book the main visits and check holidays

Easter and other holidays can affect crowds, transport and access to religious sites. Vatican events have their own calendar, and a church visit can change around services. Check the particular venue rather than assuming every attraction uses the same holiday schedule.
Keep a rain plan
Bring a layer and shoes with grip for wet paving. If heavy rain makes an outdoor archaeological visit uncomfortable, see what your ticket allows before trying to move it. Some bookings cannot be changed simply because the forecast is disappointing.
A museum or a shorter neighbourhood walk can be a better use of the day than following a long outdoor route regardless of conditions. Avoid booking every afternoon in advance if flexibility matters to you.
Give the Appian Way its own outing
For a different pace, consider a selected section of the Appian Way. The archaeological park's visitor information links transport, opening times and ticketed sites. Choose a starting point and turnaround rather than trying to cover the whole road.
Ancient paving is uneven, and some stretches share space with traffic. Catacombs and archaeological interiors have separate rules and schedules. Check the route with the visitor centre if mobility or cycling experience is a concern.
