The Amalfi Coast Base Decision

Staying directly in Positano means paying €300+ per night and lugging bags up hundreds of steep cliffside stairs.

The Three Contenders

  1. Sorrento (Best Overall Hub): Direct Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii and Naples; high-speed ferries to Capri, Positano, and Amalfi; flat, walkable town center with plenty of restaurants.
  2. Positano (Pure Romance): Dramatic vertical cliff views, luxury boutique hotels, but completely impractical for day tripping elsewhere.
  3. Salerno (Best Budget Secret): Connected directly to Rome by high-speed Frecciarossa trains (2 hours). Regular, inexpensive ferries sail from Salerno port along the Amalfi Coast to Amalfi and Positano.
