Sorrento, Salerno and Positano solve different accommodation problems. Sorrento is useful for a trip including Pompeii or Capri. Salerno offers mainline rail access and ferries along the coast. Positano puts you in the town itself, with less commuting and potentially many more steps.
Sorrento is on the opposite side of the peninsula from the Amalfi Coast. That matters when deciding how often you want to travel to Amalfi or Positano.
Salerno for a practical arrival
Salerno is worth pricing if you arrive by train and want to visit coastal towns on day trips. Check the exact ferry departure point before choosing a hotel: “near the port” is not precise enough.
The Travelmar 2026 fare sheet lists adult single fares of €12 between Salerno and Amalfi and €17 between Salerno and Positano. Two adults returning from Positano therefore spend €68 on those ferry fares alone.
That is a useful comparison when a room in Positano seems expensive. A lower room bill in Salerno still needs the cost of each planned outing added.
Sorrento for a broader itinerary
Sorrento can suit a stay combining the peninsula with other visits. Build the trip around the actual trains, buses and boats you intend to take. Trying to fit Capri, Pompeii and several Amalfi Coast towns into a short stay can leave little time in any of them.
Use the Campania regional railway operator for current rail services, and the relevant ferry operator for the sailing you need. Road traffic and sea conditions can affect different parts of the journey.
Positano for staying after the day visitors leave
A Positano stay is about having the town outside your door. Read the property’s directions carefully. A room above the beach can involve substantial climbing, even when the map shows a short distance.
Ask how many steps separate the drop-off point from reception and whether porter assistance is available at an extra charge. Confirm this before paying if stairs are a problem.
Ferries are seasonal and weather-dependent. Check your travel dates and keep a workable alternative for an important onward connection. Avoid relying on the last possible boat before a flight.
