Background

Before becoming a travel writer, William spent six years in logistics and supply-chain analysis in Manchester. A three-month trip through the Balkans led him to investigate an outdated bus timetable in Bosnia and publish the corrected route information.

Over the following decade, he travelled through Europe and Southeast Asia, often returning to the same regions in different seasons. His destination research includes Portugal, Spain, Italy and the Balkans.

What he covers

  • European rail and overland travel
  • Trip budgets
  • Destination planning
  • Transport logistics
  • Slow travel

How he approaches a guide

William looks at how the whole trip fits together: stations, connections, booking choices, daily costs and seasonal changes. His guides favour time in fewer places and routes that avoid unnecessary backtracking. Prices and schedules can change, so readers should check the sources and review dates beside the relevant information.

Accommodation

Choosing a London base in zones 2 and 3

Compare London rooms by the full journey, actual fare zones, airport connection and late-night return, not the room price alone.

Things to Do

Finding Monaco’s lifts, passages and station exits

In Monaco, the useful question is often which level a place is on. A hotel or attraction can look close while sitting above a retaining wall or beyond a set of stairs. Public lifts and passages can save a climb, but only when you find the correct entrance.

Things to Do

A pedestrian walk around Monaco’s racing landmarks

You can recognise Monaco's racing landmarks on an ordinary city walk, but follow a pedestrian route. The circuit's roads carry normal traffic outside event restrictions, and a racing line is not a safe or legal walking line.

Things to Do

A first San Marino visit from Rimini

Build a first San Marino visit around the bus and a manageable hilltop walk. The country is small, but the journey from the Italian railway and the climb into the old centre still take time. One tower, the main squares and a proper lunch make a useful first day.

How much does a Europe trip cost?
