Bucharest is easier to enjoy when you group sights by neighbourhood. Give the Parliament a booked slot, leave time for Calea Victoriei and use the metro for the longer gaps between them.

Start with a route you can enjoy
For a first week, combine Bucharest with Sinaia and Brașov. That gives you a large city, royal interiors and a smaller base near the mountains. Choose one castle excursion from Brașov and leave a day for the town itself.
With a longer stay, continue to Sighișoara and Sibiu. Read the travel times before choosing the next hotel. An afternoon spent changing trains is still part of the holiday, even when the line looks short on a map.
Choose another region for a different trip
Cluj-Napoca works for city cafés, museums and a planned visit to Turda's salt mine. Oradea has a compact centre and useful transport links in western Romania. Timișoara suits a few days around its squares, river and recent history.
To the east, Iași offers the Palace of Culture and time around Copou. On the coast, Constanța combines an old port neighbourhood with access to the sea. It is a separate journey from a Transylvania circuit. A seaside stay and a city visit also need different expectations outside summer.
Match the train ticket to the operator
CFR Călători covers many of the main journeys. Compare the arrival time, changes and train category, then buy the ticket for that service. A ticket from another company is not automatically interchangeable.
For the Bucharest–Sinaia–Brașov corridor, Softrans is another option. Its published adult fares include 32.50 RON from București Nord to Sinaia and 41.50 RON to Brașov, with the RegioExpress seat tariff included. Check its timetable before choosing a castle entry slot.
For western connections, a coach may fit your day better. Compare the actual departure and arrival addresses: a city can have several bus stations, petrol-station stops and airport stops. Our route pages distinguish an advertised minimum journey time from the departure you will book.
Check the visit before building the day around it
At Peleș, choose a timed ticket and read the seasonal calendar. Peleș and nearby Pelișor have different conservation closures. Bran is another excursion, while Corvin Castle is in Hunedoara, farther west. They do not make a comfortable single day from Bucharest.
Sibiu's Council Tower is closed for restoration. Keep the squares and lower-town walk in your plan instead of expecting a climb. In Iași, the Palace of Culture's four-museum ticket and clock-tower visit are separate purchases. At Salina Turda, boats and rides cost extra beyond mine admission.
Pay in the right lei
Romania uses Romanian lei, written RON. Moldovan lei are a different currency. Keep published tickets in their original currency while planning, then use your payment provider's rate when comparing the total.
Check how you will pay for the first local journey. Bucharest's metro, surface transport and integrated tickets cover different travel. Elsewhere, a ticket may last for a period of time or cover one journey. The city guides explain the useful choices, including when two singles cost less than a pass.
Look at a restaurant's complete menu price and serving hours. A lunch menu helps only if you can get there while it is available. A room with breakfast or a usable kitchen changes your food allowance; do not pay for the same meal twice in the plan.
Build your budget from nights and bookings
The daily figures on these pages are adjustable examples, not measured national averages or hotel offers. Private accommodation is shown as one whole room. Divide that part between the people sharing it, then add food, local transport and visits for each person.
Add intercity tickets and airport journeys separately. Replace an attraction allowance with your chosen admissions rather than adding them twice. A hostel figure is useful only when a suitable bed is available on your dates. Compare the final room price, mandatory charges and cancellation terms before committing to a route.
Plan borders as well as transport
Romania is in Schengen. Moving into Bulgaria or Hungary does not restart an ordinary Schengen short-stay allowance. Keep your travel documents accessible even on an internal journey.
A journey from Moldova crosses the external border. The Chișinău train for Iași arrives at Socola, not the main station, and the Bucharest service is an overnight trip. Check permission to enter, the return journey and the final city transfer before booking a tight connection.
Where to look for better value
Compare complete stays in Sibiu, Oradea, Timișoara and Iași against your preferred dates. Add the journey there before deciding that a lower room quote means a cheaper trip.
Where costs can rise
Popular castle weekends, busy coastal dates and city events can increase the cost of a stay. Price the room and main activities together, especially when changing bases often.
Ways to save in Romania
Book the room around useful transport, compare operators on the same journey and choose paid visits before buying a pass. Keep intercity tickets separate from local spending. Divide a private room between its occupants, and count a sleeper berth instead of the hotel night it replaces.
Flagship Destinations & Major Bases
Brașov makes a useful base for an old-town stay and a separate outing into the surrounding area. Keep the Black Church, the streets around Council Square and a longer mountain visit in different blocks of time.
Sibiu rewards a stay with time for both the Upper Town and the lower streets. The Council Tower is closed for restoration, so build your visit around the squares, lanes and a museum you can actually enter.
Cluj-Napoca works well for a city stay with one longer trip outside the centre. Give Salina Turda its own transport plan and avoid treating it as a short stop between trains.
Regional Cities, Coastlines & Countryside
Timișoara suits a stay that combines the central squares with time by the Bega. Add the Revolution Memorial for context, then leave an afternoon open for another neighbourhood or a slower walk.
Sighișoara is best enjoyed with time to walk the citadel and return to the quieter streets later. The climb from the lower town matters when choosing a room or arriving with luggage.
Oradea suits a city break built around its central buildings, river walks and a few interiors. The City Hall Tower has reopened, giving you a useful viewpoint without planning a whole day around it.
Iași works well for a stay with time for the Palace of Culture, the centre and a separate Copou walk. Choose the palace ticket carefully: its museums, representative halls and clock tower are different visits.
Constanța combines an old-town visit with time beside the Black Sea. Choose whether you want a city stay or a beach holiday first; the location that suits one may add extra journeys to the other.
Sinaia is a practical stop for Peleș when you give the castle slot and uphill journey enough time. A mountain outing is a separate plan, with weather and lift conditions to check.
