Canal walks in Leiden, art in Haarlem and Rotterdam's buildings give a Dutch trip plenty of variety beyond Amsterdam. Trains connect the cities well enough to change your base when it suits the route. For Giethoorn or a coastal outing, allow for the bus or tram after the train.
Schengen membership does not guarantee a journey without border checks. Carry the travel documents you need and check current border controls.
For a first western Netherlands trip, choose two bases rather than commuting to every place from Amsterdam. One suggested pairing is Amsterdam or Haarlem for the northern part, then Delft, Leiden or The Hague for the southern part. You get evenings in the place you came to see and fewer repeated train journeys.
Keep Maastricht for a southern leg with time of its own. Giethoorn needs a railway journey plus a bus connection, so it belongs on a full outing day rather than in a spare afternoon between museums.

Eindhoven’s Van Abbemuseum is free on Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm. In Leiden, the Burcht gives a view over the centre without an admission ticket. Book your other museum visits around the opening hours and collections you want.
Market days can solve lunch too. Leiden has central markets on Wednesdays and Saturdays; The Hague’s Haagse Markt runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Leave time to eat instead of adding another town to an already full day.
Use the site’s city figures as daily allowances, then replace the accommodation amount with the actual room bill. A dorm bed and a private room represent different purchases. Only split the private-room cost when someone is sharing it with you. Add travel between cities separately, including the return trips caused by your choice of base.
For a trip focused on the western cities, price a base in Leiden, Delft or Haarlem alongside Amsterdam. Add the trains you would need each day before deciding. Maastricht and Eindhoven suit a southern trip, but are less useful as daily commuting bases for Amsterdam.
An Amsterdam canal address can add to the room bill, especially when the city is busy. A cheaper distant room is not automatically better value: add transport for every traveller, the last return and the time you lose travelling back.
Plan free visits by the day: Eindhoven’s Van Abbemuseum is free on Tuesdays from 3pm to 5pm, while Leiden’s Burcht is freely accessible. For a longer train journey with two to seven people, compare the NS Off-peak Group Ticket with individual fares; it is a one-way ticket, not a day pass.
Amsterdam's major museums need advance planning, but a good day also leaves time for a canal walk, Albert Cuyp market or the free ferry across the IJ. Reserve the visit you most want first. Then choose a transport ticket that covers your actual journeys, including any airport trip.
Rotterdam is a city of buildings, bridges and water, with the Depot giving an unusual look at an art collection. The original Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen building remains closed. Add Binnenrotte market on a Tuesday or Saturday, or leave time for the riverfront after the museum.
Utrecht's canals have a lower waterside level as well as streets above, giving a walk through the centre its own character. The Dom Tower climb and Museum Speelklok are two different ways to spend a few hours. Their combined ticket can help if you want both.

Leiden's canals connect museum visits with a climb to the free Burcht and walks through the centre. The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is useful for an archaeology-focused afternoon. Markets add food stalls on Wednesdays and Saturdays; 3 October festivities change the usual museum plans.
Eindhoven's Philips history, Strijp-S and the Van Abbemuseum give a short visit three different directions. A Tuesday afternoon can make the art museum free. Keep the industrial district as a proper part of the day if design interests you, rather than a quick detour between trains.
In Giethoorn, much of the visit happens along the canals, on foot or by boat. The journey from Steenwijk station adds a bus ride before you reach them. Rental prices may be per boat, which matters when comparing a shared self-drive trip with tickets for a cruise.
